Hostel life shouldn’t come with a mental health tax!

The hidden reason why students are silently dropping out of college life.

Campus life isn’t just about classes anymore. It’s about how you live while you learn.

In 2025, if your college can’t offer a smooth living experience, don’t expect students to stick around and “adjust.” That era is over.

Modern students don’t want a “hostel with history.”

They want Wi-Fi that works, food that doesn’t trigger allergies, and laundry that doesn’t feel like a battle. And when they don’t get it? They transfer out or worse, burn out.

We’re witnessing the slow death of ‘adjustment culture’.

In the 90s, communal bathrooms and broken fans were considered part of the “college experience.” Now, students see these as threats to their mental health, not rites of passage.

A 2023 National Association of College and University Business Officers NACUBO survey showed a major shift: 78% of students ranked “quality of campus life” in their top 3 concerns—up from just 45% in 2013.

Why?

Because the average Indian household spends lakhs to send a child to college. This isn’t just education, it’s an investment. And today’s students expect returns.

“If I’m paying premium fees, I’m not here to struggle for a working washing machine.”

Let’s be real, these aren’t ‘small issues’.

Based on recent reports from the Higher Education Research Institute, here’s what’s bothering students:

  • Laundry Woes: Outdated machines, confusing payment methods, and always-too-few units.

  • Dining Distress: Poor options for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone with an allergy.

  • Wi-Fi Wars: Weak signals, dropped connections—academic sabotage.

  • Admin Maze: Financial aid, course registration, housing… It’s a bureaucratic marathon.

  • Maintenance Misery: Slow, unpredictable responses to urgent hostel problems.

These day-to-day hassles may seem minor to the administration, but for students, they pile up into frustration, fatigue, and even failure.

What’s the real cost of “making do”?

A 2023 study in the Journal of American College Health revealed something alarming:

Students in poor housing had 28% higher rates of anxiety and depression.

According to the National Survey of Student Engagement, students who felt good about their living conditions had 0.4 points higher GPAs than their frustrated peers.

You can’t ace your exams when you’re fighting the washing machine.

And yet, some colleges are getting it right.

Take SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram for example.

When students raised repeated concerns about the hostel laundry, the admin didn’t ignore them. They called in Dhobi G.

Through Dhobi G Campus, SRM launched a fully automated, student-first laundry service.

Here’s what changed for students:

  • Real-time tracking of orders

  • IoT-enabled machines with smart alerts

  • Mobile app for reservations and status updates

  • Faster turnaround and no more laundry stress

The result? One of the most frictionless laundry systems in Indian higher ed—and students who now spend less time chasing their clothes, more time chasing their dreams.

So what can colleges do today, right now?

Here’s a playbook for a truly hassle-free campus:

  1. Audit student pain points regularly—don’t wait for a viral post to react.

  2. Simplify everyday experiences like laundry, food, and maintenance with tech.

  3. Design with empathy, not legacy—ditch the red tape and outdated forms.

  4. Centralize student services into one-stop help zones.

  5. Use apps that students want to use (and not because they’re forced to).

  6. Set clear service standards, especially for maintenance turnaround.

When students feel seen and supported in their daily lives, they stay longer, do better, and recommend your campus to others.

The truth?

Today's students aren’t being “high maintenance.” They’re just tired of being maintained poorly.

If we want academic brilliance, we need to build environments that don’t burn students out before they even get to class.

Ask yourself:

Have you seen this happening silently on your campus? Would your own college experience have been better without the laundry war?

Tag a student who deserves better. Tag a college that’s doing it right.
